7 radiator types: Which one should I choose?

13/02-2025

Vertical Integral radiator

A radiator is not just a radiator. In fact, we have more than seven different types for you to choose from. All radiator types have advantages and disadvantages, depending on the context and the room in which the radiator is to be placed.

Here you will find an overview of seven radiator types, so you have an excellent starting point for choosing the right one for you, your home or your project.

Horizontal – the traditional radiator

Horisontal SC radiator

The most common type of radiator in Denmark and the world is the horizontal one. It is often longer than it is tall, and it is usually placed under a window or on the lower part of a wall. Although the horizontal radiator is common, this does not mean that it is dated in any way.

There are plenty of options with a horizontal radiator, and it is available in many designs and looks. They range from the classic column radiator - which most people know from older houses and apartments in the old neighborhoods of cities - to modern panel radiators with a flat front and a sleek look. The horizontal radiator is an excellent choice for placement under traditional windows or for large rooms with wide walls where extra heat is needed.

Vertical – the tall radiator

The vertical radiator is often tall and narrow and is most often chosen for rooms and spaces where there is not much space - such as narrow wall sections or small bathrooms. It is particularly suitable in rooms and buildings where there are high window sections. The windows create a thermal bridge in the room, which the radiator can remedy.

The vertical radiators can, like the horizontal ones, have several different expressions in terms of design and are made both as a vertical column radiator and as a vertical panel radiator. Here the front is smooth and can be in several different designs depending on the model. The advantages of a modern vertical radiator are the high heat output, and it is discreet and therefore rarely noticed, as it fits well into its surroundings both in shape and design.

Lowline – the low radiator

LK lowline radiator

Sometimes needs arise, that someone must find a solution for. Style and home decor are constantly evolving, and our interiors must keep up.

In recent decades, large window sections have become common in newbuilds. This requires a proper heat source to compensate for the thermal bridge that often forms in front of them. But you don’t want a radiator to block the view. That is why a low radiator, or a low convector is smart and ideal for this task. The small and low radiators often have high performance and combined - with a simple Scandinavian, minimalist design - they harmonize beautifully with the interior of new homes.

Most Lowline radiators have both a beautiful front and back, so they look good both from the inside and outside. As with horizontal and vertical radiators, the low Lowline radiators come in many designs. The low column radiators are a particularly good choice in front of large window areas, as light and air can pass through unhindered. If needed, several models of the Lowline radiators can also be placed under the ceiling, under a bench or in a convector pit.

Bench – the camouflaged radiator

Integral bench radiator

The radiator that no one notices, but that everyone enjoys! Hudevads bench radiators are the simple symbiosis of furniture and radiators. It is therefore a perfect choice for those who want heat in the entrance hall, bathroom or living room, but who thinks that another radiator will be too prominent, or you simply do not have the wall space for it. The radiator bench can be placed wherever it is needed, if the pipes are considered, which are led inside the bench legs and are therefore not visible.

With multiple design options, colors and a modern combination of wood and steel, the benches are ideal in almost all environments and can be used in private homes as well as in commercial and public buildings.

Power – the electric radiator

Rado Power electric radiator

If it is not possible to install a water-based radiator in a specific place in the home, then the new electric Power models may be the answer. Power is a series of modern and efficient electric radiators with a modern and different design that stands out from other electric radiators on the market.

Several models and colors make the interior design easy, and the installation is quick and safe. More of the new electric radiators have the same expression as our water-based models and can therefore easily fit into the rest of the style and interior design in the home or building.

Terra – the invisible radiator

Terra trench heater

Terra is a radiator that is placed under the floor – a so-called trench heater. Like Lowline, it is typically used in front of large, glazed areas, where it compensates for thermal bridges and cold drafts from the windows. A trench heater is found in a trench under the floor and is therefore not visible at all. Several models – both with and without ventilation – ensure efficient and optimal distribution of heat throughout the room. The only thing that reveals the heat source in the floor is the floor grille, which is available in a variety of styles and designs, so it can always fit in with the surroundings and the rest of the room's decor.

The Terra trench heater takes up no space in the room and does not spoil the view. It is used in private homes, public as well as private buildings, and is increasingly being used in large garden rooms among other places.

Tube – the industrial radiator

Tube industrial radiator

If you are into the rustic, industrial look, then the Tube radiator is just the thing for you. The long cylindrical radiator is made with steel fins, which gives the room a different shape and adds an unmistakable industrial look. Although the finned tube radiator is most often used in companies and commercial buildings, Tube is gradually also finding its way into private homes where a different and rawer look is desired.

Although it does not take up much space, it is extremely efficient and has high performance. Tube can be installed on both the wall and the floor - and is also available in a freestanding model - which gives it additional character and fullness. However, Tube is often installed under the ceiling, by glass sections and skylights.

Now you know most types of radiators

As you can see, there are many different types and models of radiators. The choice of radiator type and model therefore depends a lot on the room and the building. How big your windows are, how much space you have – and of course your design preferences.

Maybe you have to consider a previous installation, maybe you have a new heating system or you have just taken over an old house and need to modernize from basement to attic and all your options are open – and you are really uncertain as to which type of radiator to choose - then you may find more information in our Radiator Guide here.
